Dr. William Williams, known as Bill for his 86 years living in Marion, passed away peacefully with his family celebrating his life. He was a life-long resident of Marion, born on May 15, 1926 to Cleon and Mae Williams.
He graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1944, and was one of the many whom headed into the service to protect our freedom. He served in the Army Air Corp for two years and if asked about his experience would suggest that when the enemy had heard he had joined the service they decided to surrender.
After completing his tour after WWII had ended, Bill returned to Marion and was accepted into The Ohio State Dental School program.
After graduating from OSU, he set up a dental practice in Marion and was one of the most popular dentists for 37 years before retiring. After a few years he got restless and became a Marion realtor. He always seemed to enjoy the excitement of helping clients find the perfect homes.
Bill met the love of his life when he was in third grade and over the years the friendship grew. He and Mary Ehrick Williams eventually ran off and eloped in March of 1947, keeping their news secret for three months. Eventually Bill and Mary announced their marriage and were soul mates for 66 years.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Mary Williams; his devoted children: Krista Williams of Columbus, Nancy (Michael) Wall of Flemington, New Jersey, Scott (Marie) Williams of Overland Park, Kansas and Steve (Kelly) Williams of Marion; grandchildren: Whitney (Steve) Wagner, Brandon (Erica), Kyle (Lindsey) and Carter Wall, Peter, Carolyn, Ehrick, Erin, Bailey and Brynn Williams; great grandchild Hayes Wagner; a sister Dona (Bill) Williams Taylor; a brother-in-law Damon Wetterauer; and many nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jean Williams Wetterauer.
Dr. Williams, or Doc as many called him, was very active in the community, contributing his time and talents with many organizations. Bill was a member of the 20/30 Men’s Club and served for many years on the board of the YMCA, honored as Man of the Year. He was an active leader in the Central Ohio Dental Society, serving as president and board member, a member of the Marion Health Foundation on the Board of Trustees, and was a member of the Marion Board of Health.
Bill was also one of the developers of the Marion General Hospital Dental Clinic, a free service provided to families in need. He volunteered countless hours not only securing the clinic and equipment but donated thousands of hours of dental care along with his colleagues.
His favorite pastimes included attending his grandkids activities, tending his beautifully maintained home landscaping, playing golf and almost anything Mary asked of him.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center St., Marion from 4PM to 7PM; Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11AM with Pastor Tim Miller officiating, friends may visit with the family before the funeral from 10AM until time of service. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery.
