Hazel E. Hess, age 73, of Mount Gilead and formerly of Cardington, “went home” Saturday morning, February 16, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family following a battle with cancer.
On March 28, 1939, Hazel was born in Buchanan County, Virginia, the fourth of five children of the late Floyd and Margaret (Asbury) Lowe.
Growing up in the same neighborhood, Hazel met a young boy, Ira Hess, when she was only 3 years old. As the years passed, they continued to become better and better friends, until they realized they couldn’t live without each other. They were married on September 10, 1954, in Doreen, Virginia, at their preacher’s home. They have been inseparable ever since, cherishing their 58 years together.
Soon after their wedding, Ira wanted to get out of the coal mines, so they moved to Columbus, where they stayed until 1973, when they moved to their farm in Morrow County.
In addition to being a loving homemaker and caring for their four children, Hazel organized every detail of their family’s auction business. She kept track of all of the sale items and their records, running as many as 3 auctions a month when they were at their busiest. She truly enjoyed caring for their auction business. She also enjoyed helping her son, Tim, at the Carousel in Marion and Hess’ Café for 5 years, helping them in any way she could.
A woman of deep faith, her family has “no doubt where she is right now”, as she has “gone home” to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She formerly was an active member of the Community House of Prayer in Cardington.
A wonderful cook, Hazel had recipe after recipe that her family loved, such as her corn bread, her roasts, her lasagna, her pies, to name just a few. She loved to be surrounded by her family, so she often came up with reasons to make dinners for her family to get them all home. Sharing in her passion for cooking, her son and grandson have followed in her footsteps as cooks.
Having a heart of gold, Hazel was always able to see past everyone’s transgressions and truly see the best in them. When asked to describe her, Ira quickly said… “she was perfect in all ways”.
She will be dearly missed by her beloved husband, Ira Hess of Mount Gilead; four children: Ronald Hess of Galion, Deborah (Vaughn) Asbury of Monroe, Michigan, Tim (Brandi) Hess of Coshocton, and Ira “Jay” (Holli) Hess Jr. of Cardington; 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her infant son, Ricky Hess; and by all of her siblings: Ruth Davidson, Evelyn Nutt, Thurman “Gene” Lowe, and Ernest Lowe.
The Hess family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her homecoming will also be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Okie Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery. Following the services, family and friends are welcome to join her family for a reception in her honor at the Cornerstone Café in Mount Gilead.
