Gerald D. Jones, 85, of Edison

Gerald D. JonesGerald D. Jones, age 85, of Edison, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday afternoon, March 5, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

On May 30, 1927, Gerald was born in Praise, Kentucky, the son of the late Samuel Thomas and Buna Mae (Pierce) Jones.

While growing up in Virginia, Gerald met a girl who “lived right around the holler,” Rebal “Lucille” Mullins.  Their brothers were friends and soon they became close.  They started dating when Gerald joined the Army.  On July 22, 1950, they were married in Clintwood, VA.  He shared over 62 wonderful years of marriage with Lucille, “the love of his life,” of which he told everyone.

He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II.

Gerald retired as an electrician from General Services Administration, also known as the Marion Depot.  He was employed there for over 30 years.

A man of deep faith, Gerald was a past member of the Edison United Methodist Church, and for the last 20 years belonged to the Abundant Life Fellowship in Mount Gilead.  There he served as a greeter and an ordained deacon.  He and Lucille were also custodians of the church.

With a love for the outdoors, Gerald especially enjoyed trout fishing in the Brakes Interstate Park in Virginia and bass fishing locally in Ohio.  He also enjoyed hunting and would share the deer he tagged with others.

In the winter, Gerald liked to relax inside working on very complicated jigsaw puzzles.  He once even destroyed a castle he built, swatting at a bat flying through the house with a broom.

Possessing a gift of gab, Gerald loved talking to anyone.  He was an unofficial greeter at Walmart, loving to talk to people in the front of the store while Lucille did the shopping.  He also spent a great deal of time talking on his Ham Radio, using the call sign N8DTX.

Gerald’s family was the true passion of his heart.  He could never spend enough time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He cherished those times and the many vacations they took together.

He will always be remembered for the love he shared with everyone around him.  That, and for being an “ornery man’s man.”

Gerald will be dearly missed by his wife, Lucille, of Edison; three children: Vicki Lynn (Danny) Hart of Edison, Jeffrey Keith Jones of Edison, Sharon Beth Moore of Marion; four grandchildren: Larry Skinner II of Marion, Larissa Skinner of Mount Vernon, Amber R. McDaniels of Avon Lake, Dustin McDaniels of Cincinnati; two great grandchildren: Logan P. Jeffery of Mount Vernon, Sean Hanslik of Avon Lake; five brothers: Conrad Jones of Elkhorn City, KY, Jack (Mary Faye) Jones of Edison, Tony (Wanda) Jones of Haysi, VA, Walter (Penny) Jones of Bristol, TN, Greg Jones of Memphis, TN; and two sisters: Shelby Jean (David) Murphy of Stomping Ground, KY, and Dorothy Hickman of Bauxite, AR.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: newborn Galdys Jones and Patricia Stanford; and three brothers: Johnny, Stanley, and Lowell Jones.

The Jones family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead.  Services celebrating his life will be held there at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with Pastors Ed Overholt, Mark Hulse, and Art Wooddell officiating.  Burial with military honors provided by the VFW Post 8054 and Am Vets Post 87 will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Morrow County EMS and may be made in care of the funeral home.
