Richard W. Brooks age 86 of Marion, Ohio passed away Friday, July 5, 2013 at his residence.
He was born July 23, 1926 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio to the late Frank and Anna (Stief) Brooks.
On September 12, 1954 he married Stella (Basacos) Brooks, she preceded him in death on May 27, 2012.
Richard graduated from Upper Sandusky High Scool in 1944, Ashland College in 1950.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during WWII with the Americal 182 Infantry where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was employed as plant manager at Freezer Queen Food in Nevada, Ohio and retired as Director of Rotary Towers in Marion after eighteen years of service.
In his free time he enjoyed gardening, reading, bowling, golfing and watching his beloved Detroit Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Richard was a former member of Calvary United Methodist Church where he was church treasurer, finance committee and Sunday School Teacher for twenty years, member of Fairpark Baptist Church, Area Agency on Aging Ohio District 5, Town and Country Kiwanis Club Past President, was awarded outstanding Senior Citizen Award from the Area Agency on Aging, Director of Rotary Towers where he started programs like, Re-Assurance Program and the Care-A-Van Service, 2004 Ohio Senior Citizen Hall of Fame, former Treasurer at Marion Union Station, Treasurer for County Historical Society, Advisory Boards of RSVP, Marion General Hospital, Marion County Home, Health and Marion Area Transit, former Vice President/President and Treasurer of Marion Area AARP Chapter, former Co-Chair and Chairman for Senior Day at Marion County Fair, Chairman of the Ohio District 5 Area agency on Aging Advisory Council, member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7201.
He is survived by his daughter, Cathy (Bill) Walker of Tiffin, Oh., his son, Greg (Gretchen) Brooks of gahanna, Oh., two grandsons, Jared Brooks and Andrew Hunker, great granddaughter, Lilly Hagerman, his sister, Arlene Miller of Upper Sandusky, Oh., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Bassler.
Funeral Services for Richard will be Thursday, July 11, 2013 @ 11AM at Fairpark Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Durtsche officiating. Burial will follow at Marion Cemetery with Marion County Veterans Council conducting Military Honors. Visitation for family and friends will be Wednesday, July 10, 2013 from 3 – 8 PM at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home, 122 W. Columbia St. Marion, Ohio.
