Symposium Focuses on Presidential Scandals

john-dean The Ohio State University at Marion will host a distinguished panel of presenters as they unravel the history of scandals in the White House and explore the question of why some scandals went unpunished and others tarnished entire presidential administrations at this year’s 4th annual Warren G. Harding Symposium entitled, Scandals and the United States Presidency, Friday, July 19 & Saturday, July 20, 2013.

The Warren G. Harding Symposium is a 2 day academic, social, and cultural exploration of the life and times of America’s 29th president.  The symposium presents in-depth analysis and research by authors, historians, researchers, and experts on the Harding Era and related areas of interest.

Scandals and the United States Presidency features presentations by former Akron, Ohio resident John Dean (pictured above), who served as White House counsel for President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal, which toppled the Nixon presidency.  The two-day event includes a wine and dessert reception at The Ohio State University at Marion; Presidential Wreath- laying Ceremony at the tomb of President Warren G. Harding; workshop sessions on the Marion campus by noted authors, historians, and Harding researchers; and a Gala Dinner with keynote speakers Dean and noted Harding author, researcher, and Cleveland, Ohio attorney James D. Robenalt (pictured below).

James RobenaultDean and Robenalt will also talk about the Nixon Tapes—how they were discovered and the fight to get them released—leading to the famous “Saturday Night Massacre” in which Nixon fired Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, fanning the flames of impeachment.

2013 marks 40 years since Dean’s testimony to the U.S. Senate select committee investigating the Watergate scandal.  It also marks the 40th anniversary of Dean’s, warning to President Nixon that there is a “cancer growing on the presidency.”  In June of 1973, Dean testified before the U.S. Senate select committee investigating the Watergate scandal, which led to the discovery of the Watergate tapes.
