Dorothy Gail (Stephenson) Weiser passed on August 19, 2013, at The Village at Westerville Retirement Center, where she has resided since 2009. Prior to that, she was a proud Marion resident, where she was born on June 14, 1919.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward L Weiser, with whom she shared 57 wonderful years, daughter, Charlene Tennar, parents, Charles and Rachel (Adams) Stephenson and brother, Charles H. Stephenson.
A graduate of Harding High School, she worked in the Marion Power Shovel Co. office, followed by many years as medical secretary for Dr. Richard Morgan.
Until recent years, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was former president of the Women’s Association, a member of Martha Circle, soprano soloist in the Chancel Choir for over 50 years and particularly enjoyed directing the children’s choirs for 16 years. She deeply appreciated the connection with her Marion church family through their cards, letters and gifts since her move to Westerville.
As a private voice teacher, she taught hundreds of young people in the Marion area, until she was 89 years old. Their yearly recitals were events remembered by many. In 2007, she was featured in a Columbus Dispatch article entitled ’20 Over 60,’ profiling Ohio area musicians still actively contributing to the arts in their communities.
During WWII she performed with big bands during war bond drives and hosted her own morning radio show on WMRN for 7 years. Active in the Eastern Star, she also enjoyed membership in the Marion Lecture Recital Club, the National Federation of Music Clubs and Seniors in Song Chorus, through the Marion Senior Center.
Dorothy’s deep Christian faith, as well as love of family and music, guided her life. She is survived by daughter, Stephanie (James) Henkle of Westerville, grandson, Seth (Sommer) Carter, of Carter, of Columbus, grandson Shawn (Kelly) Weiser, granddaughter, Mikkaila and her father, Michael Tennar, brother-in-law Carlton (Susan) Cook of Byron, Ga., cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friend and piano accompanist, Rosalind Doria.
Per her request, there will be no funeral service. Visitation will take place on Sunday, August 25, 2013 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 143 S. Prospect Street, Marion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dorothy Weiser’s name may be made to the Music Fund of the First Presbyterian Church. Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors are handling arrangements.
