Charles William Rodman, age 85, of Delaware and formerly of Columbus, died Monday evening, November 4, 2013, at the Wintersong Village Nursing Center in Delaware following an extended illness.
On March 27, 1928, Charles was born in Delaware, Ohio, one of two sons of the late Charles J. and Mary Evelyn (Quillen) Rodman. He was raised in Prospect, where he graduated from Prospect High School in the Class of 1946, as their class valedictorian.
Shortly following graduation, while roller skating one day at the rink in Marion, Charles met his wife to be, Glenna Louise Mountz, and he quickly knew he found the woman he couldn’t live without. Then, just three months later, they were married on August 29, 1948. They have cherished every moment of their 65 years together.
After high school, Charles attended the Ohio State University in Columbus, where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Physics. He would put that education to good use for over 40 years at the Battelle Institute as an acoustical engineer, until his retirement in 1991. During his time at Battelle, he was extremely dedicated, moving numerous times to work at other plants, and traveling all over the United States for jobs whenever his specialties were needed.
Having an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding for how things work, Charles was a member of the American Society Testing Materials, with whom he was given many awards for his work with ASTM. With the ASTM professional organization, he and Glenna enjoyed many trips to Europe, which they deeply appreciated. He also was a member of the Acoustical Society of America, and the Marion Masonic Blue Lodge and the Columbus Commandry Lodge.
Finding beauty in sound, Charles always was listening to music, enjoying a wide variety of styles of music.
Despite his incredible mind, Charles was still “very down to earth” and easy to talk to. He was truly a gentleman and a scholar in all ways.
He will be dearly missed his wife, Glenna Rodman of Delaware; his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Rodman of Grove City; and several nieces and nephews.
Including his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his son, Leslie Rodman in 1994; and his brother, James Rodman.
His family will greet friends from 9 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 9th, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will follow at his graveside in Marion Cemetery at 10:20 a.m., with Pastor Ben Shaeffer officiating.
