The service for Polly Detweiler, 75, of Marion will be 11:00am Monday, November 11th at Crosswood United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Ziraldo officiating. Burial will follow at Waldo Cemetery. Friends may call at Boyd-Born Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00pm-5:00pm. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Crosswood UM Church.
Polly passed away peacefully in her Marion home Thursday afternoon after a three year battle with breast cancer.
She was born on April 13, 1938 in Ada, Ohio to the late Thelma Pincombe Taylor Crane and Bennett West Taylor. She grew up in Mantua, Ohio and was a 1956 graduate of Crestwood High School and attended Kent State University. Polly resided in Marion County for the past 54 years and retired from GTE after 25 years of service in the directory department. She was a long-time member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Marion, Peace Community Church in Waldo and, most recently, a charter member of Crosswood Church where she served on the building and pre-school committees and was a member of the Alpha Circle of UMW. Polly sang bass with the Ohio Heartland Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, and sewed with the Tuesday Morning Quilters. She was well-known for her love of gardening, OSU men’s basketball and cookie baking. Polly was formerly active in the Junior Service Guild and was an advisor for the Marion Shamrocks 4-H Club for many years.
On August 29, 1958, she married the love of her life, the late Donald D. Detweiler of Tallmadge, Ohio who preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Faye Fedor of Aurora, Ohio. Surviving are two daughters, Karen Henry (Steven) of Malverne, New York and Kristen Thomas (Jason) of Perry, Ohio; two sons, Kirk Detweiler of Marion and Kent Detweiler (Juliane) of Newbury Park, California; a brother, Hubert “Johnny” Taylor of Mantua, Ohio; two sisters, Nancy Hildebrand of Bellingham, Washington and Linda Taylor of Stow, Ohio; and seven grandchildren, Max and Samantha Henry, Meredith Detweiler, Lark and Scott Detweiler and James and Charles Thomas.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the Hospice Team of Marion General Hospital, the Sweet Adelines and the Crosswood Church family for their support.
