Robert E. “Radar” Nichols, age 79, of Marion, “went home” to be with the Lord, Saturday afternoon, November 23, 2013, at the Marion General Hospital following an extended illness.
On January 17, 1934, Robert was born in Marion, Ohio, the son of the late George and Thelma (Danner) Nichols. He attended Elgin School, until leaving early to start working to help his family.
In 1955, when Robert was 17, he was the 105th person to begin working at the Whirlpool Corporation in Marion. He dedicated himself there for 44 years as a repairman, until his retirement in 1999. His friends there gave him his nickname, Radar.
Shortly after his retirement, Robert moved with a couple of friends to Phoenix, Arizona, for a few years, where he loved to get in his car and drive all directions to see the mountains. He also loved taking target practice using his gun collection.
Always tinkering, Robert enjoyed working on cars and putting together model cars.
A man of faith, Robert formerly was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, and he continued reading and studying the Bible the rest of his life.
An easy going man, Robert was always in a good mood, looking at the bright side of life. He also was an intelligent man, knowing something about everything.
Robert was a special Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa, and he will be dearly missed by his son, Ronald Nichols of Marion; two daughters: Laura Nichols of Marion, and Jennifer (David) Short of Marengo; five grandchildren: Bryan, Dara and Robert Nichols of Marion, and Dylan and David Short of Marengo; four great-grandchildren: Gage, Kylee, Braylon, and Randon Nichols, all of Marion; a special friend, Donald Redmon; and his talkative parrot, Dusty.
Including his parents, Robert was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Services will be observed privately by his family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home to help his family with unexpected expenses.
Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve Robert’s family and your private condolences may be expressed to them by visiting www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
