In keeping with the National Music Federation’s annual March “Crusade For Strings” theme, Marion Lecture Recital Music Club (MLRMC) will honor the history and contributions of stringed instruments to the world of music from the time of the Renaissance to today’s Led Zeppelin. On Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Crosswood United Methodist Church, 1551 Richland Road, musicians playing a variety of stringed instruments will provide a program free of charge for the public.
Pianist Jim Besch and Friends will provide an overture of jazz selections while audience members arrive. The program will begin with a Delion Cello Trio that includes Carolyn Green, Maxine Hunter and Gary Iams, who will play dance inspired music of the Baroque period, 1600-1750: Daquin’s sprightly couple’s dance, “Rigaudon”; Handel’s slow and stately triple-meter dance, “Sarabande”; Telemann’s graceful triple-meter “Minuet”; and Bach’s “Sarabande”.
Violinist Inda Lama will play a set of fiddle tunes, accompanied by guitarist Andrew Berridge: a Celtic medley, “Come In From the Rain” and “Daggert’s Revenge”; “Red-Haired Boy”; “Danny Boy”, “Blackberry Blossom”; and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”.
Jo Ann Zimmerman will play short selections on three not-so-common stringed/period instruments used as ballad-style accompaniment for singing: baritone ukulele – Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour’s “But I Don’t Know Enough About You” and Consuelo Vasquez’s “Bésame mucho” (Kiss Me a Lot); Spanish Renaissance guitar – an anonymous 17th century tune, “Joan to the Maypole”; and Renaissance tenor lute – “Belle qui tiens ma vie” (Fair One Who Holds My Heart) song and pavan/galliard dance, with the additional accompaniment of Jim Besch on electronic harpsichord and Inda Lama on violin.
Jonathan Culler, a River Valley High School freshman, will play on a string bass Francois Gossec’s “Gavotte”, accompanied by pianist Jim Besch. This Baroque piece was inspired by very early French folk dancing rhythms.
Heart Strings of Faith string quartet members Sarah Gold, violin; Trish Fredritz, viola; Hannah Schlichting, cello; and Jake Schlichting, string bass will play: Sting’s “Fields of Gold”; Holst’s “Jupiter”; Davis’ “The Gift”; White’s “Each Spring”; and Brooker, Reid, and Fisher’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale”.
