Marion Sail and Power Squadron announced the dates for their boating course open to the public. The two-day course begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 and Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Marion Public Library. The class covers sessions taught by members of the Marion Sail and Power Squadron and a representative from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, plus a final exam.
While the course is free, there is a $40 fee for materials, with additional family members paying only $5 for the test and sharing a textbook.
The sessions will cover topics such as boat terms and types, marine radiotelephones, aids to navigation, adverse conditions, boat handling, trailer boating, and personal watercraft.
Successful completion of the class provides certification for a safe boating course, now a state requirement for anyone born on or after January 1, 1982. Passing the final exam also allows individuals to be invited into membership in the Marion Sail and Power Squadron, which provides further education with advanced courses in seamanship, piloting, sailing, navigation, and others.
Marion Sail and Power Squadron members encourage anyone who is interested in knowing more about the organization’s education and recreational activities to contact the public education class chairman, Sandra Novatny at (740) 389.1681.
