Paul S. Young, age 88, of Marion, died peacefully in his sleep early Monday morning, April 28, 2014, at his home in Kingston Residence following an extended illness.
On July 21, 1925, Paul was born in Marion, Ohio, the fifth of seven children of the late Raymond “Casey” and Florence (Stoner) Young. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1943.
Shortly after graduation, Paul enlisted to serve his beloved country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served as an engine mechanic aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga aircraft carrier that was stationed in the pacific.
Upon his honorable discharge, Paul returned home to Marion to re-unite with a young lady who also was crazy about roller skating, Jean Marie Fitch. They were married on August 28, 1946, at the First Church of the Brethren, and they were blessed with 65 wonderful years together. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2011.
Shortly after their wedding, Paul and Jean moved to Akron, Ohio, where he attended the University of Akron and earned a bachelor’s degree in business. Then, in 1954, he again returned home to Marion, to help his brother, Bob Young, own and operate Bob’s Shell Gas Station on Main Street. In 1980, Bob and Paul moved their gas station over to E. Center St., where they owned and operated Young’s Sohio Gas Station at two different locations. They took great pride in caring for and “filling up” their many loyal customers.
Paul truly had a passion for skiing, both water and snow skiing. He spent his summers water skiing on the Scioto River and Lake Erie, and he spent his winters traveling to Vail Colorado to go skiing with a Marion ski club, a group of good friends and fellow business owners who loved to ski. He snow skied up until he was 71 years old, especially because everyone over 70 skied for free. He also loved to play cards and shoot pool, and would conveniently play a little better any time there was a friendly wager on the line.
Always on the go, Paul and Jean enjoyed traveling all throughout the United States, often making stops for adventures to excite Paul along the way. Some of their best times were spent with family and friends at their summer home in Lakeside, Ohio. In their later years, they enjoyed spending their winters in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Paul made the best out of every situation, lived his life to the fullest, and never let anything get him down. He had a fun loving personality and always had a smile on his face.
He will be dearly missed by four sons: Russell (Elizabeth) Young of Aurora, OH, Jeffrey Young of Orfino, ID, Michael Young of Marion, and Steve (Beth) Young of Caledonia; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Young of Jupiter, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his wife and parents, Paul was preceded in death by his son and two daughters-in-law, David Mark (Cheryl) Young and Vivian Young; his grandson, David “Mark” Young II; four brothers and three sisters-in-law: William (Alice) Young, Don (Lillian) Young, and Bob Young; 2 sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy Young and Patricia (Ralph) Weber.
His family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2nd, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life well lived will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, at the First Church of the Brethren, 860 E. Church St., Marion, with Pastor Rick Hicks officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
