Alvin Thomas, age 76, passed away on May 12, 2014, at his residence. Surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren, he passed peacefully in his sleep after a long and hard-fought battle with respiratory disease.
Al was born in Marion on August 27, 1937, the son of the late Roland and Thelma (Austin) Thomas.
After graduating from Harding High School in 1954, Al attended Baldwin Wallace University and later The Ohio State University.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps., he proudly and honorably served his country.
Al spent the majority of his career as a manager at Whirlpool.
On June 27, 1959, Al married Nancy McCurdy, who survives him and who lovingly and diligently cared for him. Al is also survived by his four children: Ricky (Michelle) Thomas, Amy Thomas, Julie Flugga Thomas, and Jamie (Jessica) Thomas; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Velda (Bill) Huffman; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his brothers Charlie and Clyde and his sister Betty.
Al attended St. Mary Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and the VFW.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. A Mass will be celebrated for Al on Friday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marion with Father Thomas Buffer presiding.
