Leroy E. Colvin, age 90, formerly of Marysville and Marion, died Saturday evening, May 24, 2014, at the Laurels of Worthington surrounded by his loving daughters following an extended illness.
On June 21, 1923, Leroy was born in Paintsville, Kentucky to the late Bruce and Lilly (Spradlin) Colvin. He left school early to help his father on the family farm. At the beginning of World War II, Leroy wanted to help his fellow countrymen, so he enlisted to serve in the U.S. Army. He served in Europe as both a combat infantryman and as a medic, earning several ribbons, medals and three bronze stars.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home to Kentucky, where he married Lelia Caudill in 1947. He worked as a plasterer, and later at a dairy. He and Lelia worked together at a children’s home, and later moved to the Dayton area where he worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a pest control engineer.
In the early 1970’s, Leroy moved to Marysville, Ohio, to be near his beloved brother, Walter and Walter’s wife, Dorothy. He lived there until 2007, when he became ill, and moved to live with his daughter, Tammy in Marion, Ohio.
Leroy enjoyed spending time with family, and caring for his Chihuahuas, Tiny and Butch. He loved watching basketball, especially the Boston Celtics, his favorite players being John Havlicek and Larry Bird, tinkering with his cars, the music of Sam Cook and Randy Travis, and eating sweets. Leroy loved to talk and joke, and always had an April Fool’s trick for his daughter Tammy.
He will be sorely missed by his two daughters: Tammy Colvin Sedam of Marion, Ohio, and Debbie Ahmed of New Carlisle, Ohio; his son-in-law Ken Sedam: four grandchildren: Emma, Fuzzy and Ivy Sedam and Libby Snyder; his nephews: Jim and Bruce Colvin; his niece, Glenna Hicks; and his many great nephews and nieces.
Leroy is also survived by his half brothers and sisters: Charles Colvin of Canton Ohio, Robert and Bill Colvin, Ann Butcher and Sue Mullins, all of Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, his infant grandson, Javier Alonso; two brothers: Walter and James Colvin; a half-brother, Bruce Colvin, and a half-sister, Mabel Robinette.
Graveside services with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Chapel Heights Memory Gardens, with Celebrant Don Lockwood officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home to help get a monument in his memory.
