Kenneth H. Brewer, 66, of Marion

Kenneth H. BrewerKenneth H. Brewer, age 66, of Marion, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, May 31, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

On May 18, 1948, Ken was born in Marion, Ohio, the youngest of two children of the late Delmar and Geneva (Albert) Brewer.  He was raised on the family farm North of Marion, and graduated from Ridgedale High School in the Class of 1966.  He continued his education at Alderson-Broaddus University in Phillippi, West Virginia, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

Prior to graduating, Ken was introduced to his future wife, Barbara Logan, by their sisters.  They were married on May 1, 1971, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Mount Gilead.

A lifelong resident of Marion, Ken started his working career as a math teacher at Elgin High School.  Next, he worked as a sales representative for Mid-Ohio Electronics for several years.  Wanting to be his own boss, Ken left Mid-Ohio Electronics to put the knowledge he gained from his grandpa, Kenny Albert, to use as a self-employed contractor.  He has used his many talents to help many people in tough situations over the years.  In addition to contracting, he also served as the sexton at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Brush Ridge for a few years.

Dedicated to his church, Ken was a faithful member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Mount Gilead, where he served as an usher for many years.  Growing up, he was raised as a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Marion.

Dating back to the early 1980’s, Ken developed a passion for serving on mission trips, and he has been on a mission trip nearly every year since.  The knowledge he had for construction made him an invaluable member of each team.  On many trips he stayed behind or went back to make sure the projects were completed for the families in need.

Over the years, some of his favorite pastimes were playing cards, bingo, and sharing his vast knowledge of everything.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Brewer of Mount Gilead; three children: Adam Brewer of Lexington, KY, Grant Brewer of New Milford, CT, and Anita (fiancé Xeng Her) Brewer of Boston, MA; a beloved grandson, Mason Brewer; a sister, Diana (Gerald) Seckel of Caledonia; a step-mother, Mary Claire Brewer of Marion; two sisters-in-law: Anne (Tom) Cotton, and Emily (Bob) Shaffer, and brother-in-law, Tom Logan, all of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 5th, at Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion.  Services honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church (address below), with Rev. Lori Burdette-Steele officiating.  Burial will be observed privately by his family in Grand Prairie Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, c/o Missions Fund, 75 E. High St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338.

Ken’s family would like to extend their deep heartfelt sympathies to the families of the others involved in the accident.
