Clippers Beat Braves 5-1

The Columbus Clippers (27-31) beat the Gwinnett Braves (30-27) 5-1 Tuesday night. Gabriel Arias was the story of the night as he didn’t allow a run until the eighth in a quality start. The win for Arias was his first with the Clippers.

Arias (1-2, 3.93 ERA) had a tremendous start to his night, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. He pitched seven and two-third innings and allowed one run on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Zach Stewart (3-3, 4.07 ERA) couldn’t match Arias. The Clippers scored four times off him, three earned, on 11 hits with two walks, but Stewart did strikeout a pair.

The Clippers jumped out to a quick lead on five singles in the first. After Jose Ramirez struck out to start the game Tyler Holt, Ryan Rohlinger and Elliot Johnson each singled to load the bases with one out. Giovanny Urshela cashed in with an RBI infield single and a second run scored on a throwing error by third baseman Edward Salcedo. Tim Fedroff scored Johnson on an RBI single and made it a 3-0 game.

The Clippers added another run in the sixth on an RBI single by Tyler Holt and made it a four-run lead. Holt had another RBI single in the 8th to make it 5-0 Columbus.

The G-Braves got their first tomahawk chop rally in the eighth. Edward Salcedo led-off the eighth with a single. He then stole second and got to third on a poor throw by catcher Roberto Perez. After Derrick Mitchell walked, Salcedo scored the first Braves run of the game as Ozzie Martinez grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Eight of the nine Clippers starters got a hit. Holt and Adam Abraham, in his first game with the Clippers of 2014, each had three-hit nights.

Game two of the series at Gwinnett will be a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Danny Salazar (0-3, 7.11 ERA) will take the mound against Cody Martin (3-4, 3.36 ERA) for the G-Braves.
