Clippers Beat Braves 9-4

The Columbus Clippers (28-31) were too much for the Gwinnett Braves (30-28) as the Clippers won 9-4. The Clippers scored seven unanswered runs in the win. The Clippers hit three homers in the game and had a total of 13 hits.

Duke von Schamann (1-0, 6.52 ERA) had a decent start in his first Clippers win. He allowed four runs on six hits and one walk in five innings of work. Cody Martin (3-5, 3.82 ERA) struggled for the G-Braves Wednesday night. He allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four and two-third innings. Martin allowed three homers to Columbus.

The Clippers jumped out to a quick lead in the first. Jose Ramirez led off the game with a single and stole second to get in scoring position for Adam Abraham who singled and scored Ramirez.

Gwinnett responded quickly with a one-out rally. Tyler Pastornicky and Phillip Gosselin each singled and jogged in to score on a Mark Hamilton three-run homer.

The Clippers and G-Braves each scored one run in the second to make it 4-2 going to the third.

The Clippers would use the big fly to tie it up in the third. With one out Abraham hit a solo homer to draw the Clippers within one. With two outs Giovanny Urshela tied it with a solo bomb of his own.

Columbus got the third homer of the game for the Clippers in the fifth inning. With Elliot Johnson on first base and two outs in the inning Carlos Moncrief hit a liner to right that left the park and made it 6-4 Clippers.

The Clippers added three more in the next two innings to make it 9-4 Columbus.

Every batter except Johnson had at least one hit, though he did draw a walk, scored a run and had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Multiple Clippers had three hit games both Wednesday night and the game before on Tuesday. Ramirez went 3-5 with two runs scored and two steals. Justin Sellers was 3-5 with an RBI.

The bullpen was almost perfect in four innings of work. Frank Herrmann, Scott Barnes and Mark Lowe each pitched perfect innings. Vinnie Pestano allowed a pair of two-out singles in the ninth.

Game three of the four at Gwinnett marks the midpoint of the 10-game road trip for Columbus. Tyler Cloyd (2-3, 4.91 ERA) will be the starter for Columbus against Hector Rodriguez (4-6, 3.38 ERA) for Gwinnett. The first pitch will be at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.
