The Columbus Clippers (29-31) handled the Gwinnett Braves (30-29) and won 6-0 in six innings of a rain-shortened game. The Clippers scored five of their six runs with two outs.
Tyler Cloyd (3-3, 4.54 ERA) was off to a great start before the skies opened up in Georgia Thursday night. He pitched five innings of scoreless ball and allowed four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Jordan Walden (0-1, 27.00 ERA) was the starter for the G-Braves on a rehab assignment. He allowed two runs on one hit with three strikeouts in two-thirds of one inning in a rehab start down from Atlanta.
It was an unusual start to the game for Walden. He struck out the side in the first, but a wild pitch on the third strike to Adam Abraham allowed him to reach first with two outs. The next man up was Elliot Johnson and he homered to give the Clippers a 2-0 lead.
The Clippers had another two-out rally in the second. Audy Ciriaco drew a two-out walk off of new G-Braves pitcher, lefty Daniel Rodriguez. Justin Sellers singled to set up a first and second situation. Jose Ramirez hit a blooper to right field that turned into a two-run double and gave the Clippers a four run lead.
The Clippers added another run in the third and one more before the rain delay in the sixth to open up a 6-0 lead.
Ramirez, Johnson and Roberto Perez drove in all six Clippers runs with two RBI each.
The Clippers go for the sweep Friday at 7:05 p.m. Kyle Davies (2-3, 4.30 ERA) will try for the Clippers’ fourth win in a row against Gus Schlosser (3-2, 4.94 ERA) at Gwinnett.
