Knights Down Clippers 4-2

The Columbus Clippers (31-33) lost to the Charlotte Knights (22-43) 4-2 Monday night. The Clippers had only three hits and struck out 13 times in the loss.

Deunte Heath (2-1, 2.75 ERA) dominated the Clippers early not allowing a hit through the first four innings. He finished after five innings allowing only one run and hit on a homer with four walks and seven strikeouts. Tyler Cloyd (3-4, 4.58 ERA) got the start on short rest for the Clippers after pitching Thursday. He went five and one-third innings and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Taylor Thompson closed out the ninth for his first save.

The Knights jumped out to a quick lead in the first. With two outs Marcus Semien hit a homer off of Cloyd to give the Knights the lead.

The Knights got another in the second. Andy Wilkins reached on a wild pitch by Cloyd on a strikeout with one out. With two outs Jared Mitchell singled to get Wilkins into scoring position. Micah Johnson made it 2-0 on an RBI single.

The Clippers got their first hit and first run in the fifth. Ryan Rohlinger crushed a homer just fair down the left field line and made it a one-run game.

The Knights got some separation with a solo homer by Josh Phegly in the sixth. The homer made it 3-1 for Charlotte. The homer was the 13th allowed by Cloyd, second of the game.

Columbus got within a run in the seventh. Ryan Rohlinger was hit by a pitch to start the frame. With two outs and Rohlinger still at first Tyler Holt hit an RBI double and made it a 3-2 game, but that’s as close as it would get.

Zach McAllister (NR) will make his second minor league rehab start and get the start with the Clippers before heading back to Cleveland. McAllister will face Charlie Leesman (2-5, 3.14 ERA) at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday as the Clippers go for the series win at Charlotte.
