Joseph S. Burns, 98, of Marion

Joseph S. Burns, age 98, of Marion passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at 6:15 p.m. in the Presidential Center, Marion.

He was born in Allen County, Ohio on December 10, 1915 to Willard and Beulah (Dunlap) Burns.

Joseph married Marie E. Mahoney in Tiffin, Ohio on September 3, 1937 and she preceded him in death on December 3, 2002 in Marion, Ohio.

The former Tiffin, Ohio resident graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School in 1934. He was a dedicated member of Central Christian Church where he served as an elder, a deacon, former trustee, and was a member of the Chapel Class. Joseph was a member of Masonic Lodge #77 Tiffin, Oh. where he held council & chapter degrees, a member of the Pleasant Senior Center, and past member of the Marion Industrial Club. He thoroughly enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, working in his tomato garden, growing roses, woodworking, and playing cards. The highlight of each year was the family fishing trip to Canada for 2 weeks which they did for over 20 years together.

Joseph was employed for 10 years with Webster Manufacturing in Tiffin, Ohio and in 1948 moved to Marion. He was employed for 33 years as a draftsman/lead checker with Fairfield Engineering before retiring in 1982.

Joseph was a dedicated father and grandfather and is survived by 2 sons; Bruce Burns of Marion, Oh. & Carl (Sue) Burns of Hot Springs, Ark., a daughter; Cindy Nickolson of Bexley, Oh., 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, an infant son; William Burns, 2 brothers, & 2 sisters.

He went out of his way to help anyone and did not know a stranger.

Friends may call at the Central Christian Church, 421 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014. Pastor Marilyn Winters will conduct the service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday and the burial will take place in the Fairmont Cemetery, Tiffin, Oh. at 2:15 p.m. on Monday.
