Red Sox Down Clippers 4-1

The Columbus Clippers (49-42) fell to the Pawtucket Red Sox (47-46) 4-1 after rain delayed the start of the game one hour and 11 minutes and the game was delayed again by 46 minutes after the fifth. Columbus couldn’t muster much offense as the PawSox tied the series at one.

Matt Barnes (4-6, 4.63 ERA) was effectively wild Monday night for Pawtucket. He went five innings and allowed just one run on five hits, but walked five with two strikeouts. Kyle Davies (4-7, 3.89 ERA) was solid, but never pitched with the lead. He allowed a pair of runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings. Tommy Layne was tasked with getting the final three outs for Pawtucket and recorded his seventh save.

With the delay neither starter pitched in the sixth.

Pawtucket jumped out to a 1-0 lead three pitches into the game. Andres Torres blasted a lead-off homer over the scoreboard in right to start the game.

Columbus tied the game in the fourth. Audy Ciriaco led off the bottom of the frame with a double to left. Ryan Rohlinger hit a sharp grounder to second, but Pawtucket second baseman Ryan Roberts threw behind Ciriaco to get him out at second. Rohlinger moved up to second base on the short rundown. With two outs Justin Sellers drove in Rohlinger with a single.

The PawSox wasted no time retaking the lead. In the fifth an RBI single by Will Middlebrooks on rehab assignment from Boston made it 2-1 Pawtucket.

The Clippers had a chance to tie it with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, but Giovanny Urshela hit into an inning-ending doubleplay.

Before the sixth could begin the rain delayed the Clippers for the second time.

After the second delay Pawtucket came out swinging. The PawSox picked up three hits in the sixth and extended their lead to two.

Columbus got the tying run to the plate twice after the delay, but never got a run in.

In game three of the series the Clippers turn to Tyler Cloyd (6-5, 4.35 ERA) against Allen Webster (4-4, 2.86 ERA) and Pawtucket. The Clippers and Red Sox start at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
