Marlene Jane (Rose) Morthland, age 74, passed away peacefully at home on August 24, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.
Marlene was born on October 15, 1939, in Crestline, Ohio, the daughter of Wilibur R. and Zoa I. (Garverick) Rose, Sr.
Marlene attended Gallon Senior High School before marrying Allen D. Morthland on July 4, 1957 and settling in Galion, where she was a member of the First Methodist Church. Marlene was a proud housewife who loved taking care of her family.
As empty-nesters, Marlene and her husband settled in Marion. They served for many years as the Pleasant Township Volunteer Fire Department caretakers. Marlene grew very fond of the firefighters and their young families and loved spending time with them. Later, she worked part-time at Ryan’s restaurant. She made many friends during her years at Ryan’s, where she became a mentor and mother-figure to some of her young co-workers. The true joy of Marlene’s life was her family. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with those special people in her life. Marlene was very proud to have earned her G.E.D. as a grandmother.
Marlene touched many lives, and she will be sadly missed by the many friends and family she leaves behind, including her husband, Allen; daughter, Melanie S. (Arnie) Schropp; son, Roger A. Morthland; grandson, Craig E. (Ashley) Walter; brothers, Donald (Lois) Rose and Wilbur R. (Jeanette) Rose; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved poodles, Pepper and Princess.
Much appreciation and love to the staff of the Marion General Hospital Hospice Care for the kind and gentle care they provided our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend these past several weeks.
A celebration of Marlene’s life will be held at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home, 122 W. Columbia St., Marion, Ohio, on Thursday, August 28, 2014, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Marlene’s family requests donations be made to Marion General Hospital Hospice Care, 278 Barks Rd., Marion, Ohio 43302.
