Phillip S. “Phil” Dumbaugh, age 86, of Mount Gilead, died Friday morning, December 3, 2010, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
On January 13, 1924, Phil was born in Mount Gilead, Ohio, the son of the late Frank and Addie (Hull) Dumbaugh. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1943.
On June 20, 1953, Phil married Clara LaVerne Burroughs at Trinity United Methodist Church in Mount Gilead. Together they shared of 57 years of marriage.
Most of Phil’s life was spent working on his family farm. There he raised cattle, hogs, and sheep and grew corn, wheat, hay, and soy beans. He also spent some time roofing, spouting, hanging wallpaper, and interior decorating of many buildings including the Craven-Snyder Funeral Home on North Main St. and the Geyer’s Market on Iberia St.
A sports fan, Phil enjoyed baseball, football, and basketball, cheering for the Cleveland Indians and Browns. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and his son Neal coach.
Phil was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Gilead.
Phil will be missed by his wife, Clara of Mount Gilead; his two sons: Dennis (Liz) Dumbaugh of Oaklahoma, and their children: Aaron and Sarah; Neal (Amy) Dumbaugh of Ada, Ohio, and their children: Morgan, Malary, and Austin; and many nieces and nephews.
Phil was preceded in death by five brothers: Clarence, Richard, Eugene, Marshall, and Howard.
A memorial service to celebrate Phil’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 13, 2010, at the First Baptist Church, 51 W. High St., Mount Gilead, with Pastor Joshua Melvin officiating.
