Early morning crash claims life of Marion man

The Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that a Marion man was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Friday morning on Smeltzer Road.

The Patrol said the crash took place at approximately 1:30am on Smeltzer Road south of Marion-Cardington Road. Christopher Nagel, 37, of Marion, was driving a 2003 Ford F150 south on Smeltzer Road  when Troopers said he drove off the right side of the road. Nagel struck a mailbox, over-corrected, drove off the left side of the road and struck a tree.

Investigators said Nagel was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Marion General Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The Patrol said Nagel was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Pleasant Township Fire Department at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
