Hester L. Ewers, 76

Hester L. Ewers was very proud of her upbringing as a coal miner’s daughter and lived a life of faith.  “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:24.

She died unexpectedly Sunday night, December 26, 2010 at her home.

She was born on November 23, 1934 in Oswald, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Charlie T. and Jewel Roberta (Wilson) Thomas.

Hester was a graduate of Ansted High School in the class of 1953.

She moved to Ohio in 1964 and did clerical work for several locations, most notably Mutual Insurance Company in Shelby, Copco Paper in Columbus, and Defense Financial and Accounting Service also in Columbus, where she retired.

On October 12, 1974, she married James Ewers in Ansted, West Virginia.

Hester was a member of the Bryn Zion Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school.  She was also very proud of her completion of the Lay Pastor’s Training Program through the American Baptist Church.

She enjoyed reading Christian based romance novels as well.  James said, “There must be 100s of those books around the house”.

Her sister recalled her beautiful singing voice, while others remembered how soothing it was when she spoke to you.

Musically inclined, Hester played the Mountain (Lap) Dulcimer.

Those that knew and loved her will remember her as strong and loving with a gentle spirit.  Due to her honest and forthright nature you always knew where you stood with Hester.

Most important though were her family.  The lives of her nieces and nephews were very special to her and even to this day they each received a birthday card.

She will be missed by her husband, James; sister Ernestine (Steve) Olsavsky of Columbus; brother Ralph (Geneva) Thomas of Fayetteville; sister-in-law Mary Jane Stewart of Mansfield; special nieces Robbie (Eddie) Withrow of Fayetteville and Charity (Clark) Callis of Vanlue; and many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her 8 brothers and sisters, Joe Thomas, David Thomas, Mary Norman, Ruby Langley, John Thomas, Lois Teaster, James Thomas, and Nola Plumley; and her nephew Jerry Teaster.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at 11:00 AM at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead, with Jeff Hubschman officiating.  Friends may call from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.  Burial will take place in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the American Lung Association.
