Alma G. Shambaugh, 99, formerly of Marion, Ohio, died early Monday morning, January 26, 2015, at Hospice Atlanta Center following a brief illness.
Born August 3, 1915, in Delaware, Ohio, Alma was the youngest of seven children of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Kraus) Schroeter. The family moved to Marion where she attended St. Mary Grade School and High School, graduating in the Class of 1933. She then graduated from the Marion Business College.
Alma married Lowell Shambaugh, on September 2, 1937 at St. Mary Church in Marion. They shared sixty two wonderful years of marriage, and lovingly raised four children. He preceded her in death on February 29, 2000.
Alma was a gifted and graceful homemaker with a peaceful spirit, happy to see her family thrive. Her legacy is a life of devotion to the Virgin Mary and thoughtful prayer to St. Jude and St. Anthony. Now she has found her eternal peace, joyfully reunited with Lowell.
Alma is survived by three of her children: Thomas (Suzanne) Shambaugh of Nashville, TN, Marcia (Thomas) Dunn, of Atlanta, GA, and Judith (Francis) Gallagher of Fleming Island, FL; a son-in-law, Lowell Chapman of Dayton, OH; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Alma was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Suzanne Chapman; granddaughter, Nancy Kay Chapman; and all six siblings: Fabian and Francis Schroeter, Hildred Barnwell, Elizabeth McGrath, Pauline Schroeter, and Catherine Warner.
Her family will greet friends from 9 – 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 31st, at the St. Mary Church, 251 N. Main St., Marion. A Mass will be celebrated in her honor at 10 a.m., with Father Thomas Buffer presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
