Frederick H. “Gunny” Weiss, age 77 of Marengo passed away Monday, December 27, 2010 at MedCentral in Mansfield following a two week illness.
He was born on January 24, 1933 in Coudersport, PA to the late Herman and Grace (Denson) Weiss.
A Master Gunnery Sergeant of the US Marine Corp, he served 26 years and was a veteran of Korea and served two tours in Vietnam.
Settling in Marengo in 1975, he served as the Morrow County Veterans Administrator, pumped gas at Gene’s Marathon, and worked with Buy Rite Auto in Delaware. He served 10 years on the Marengo Village Council and also was the caretaker of the Bennington Township cemetery’s for a number of years.
A man of deep faith, he was an active member of the Marengo United Methodist Church. He helped on the church mission trips, with the corn sales, and the annual chicken barbeque. He was a life member of the Oakland Park Conservation Club and assisted with the youth safety program. A member of American Legion Post #710, he served as the Chairman of the Red Cross Blood Mobile many years in Morrow County.
He enjoyed the Amish lifestyle, loved all draft horses and attending horse pulls. He loved being out in the country, as well as fishing and hunting. One never to say no, he would give you the shirt off his back. Most proud of his family and faith in God, he will be remembered for his service to country.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years: Eleanor (Burch), Sons Daniel (Carol) of Marengo, Victor of Euless, TX, Gardner (Mary) of Arequipa, Peru, 6 Grandchildren: Becky Cordova, Holly, Jeremy, Jason, and Andrew Weiss, Gonzolo, 5 Great-grandchildren: Sven, Chloe, Nicholas, Mason, Maddox, and one expected, Brother: Thomas (Sandy), Phoenix, AZ, Sisters: Lorraine Saunders of Delaware, Marguerite (Jim) Wilde of Thorp, WI, Linda (Gary) Pupp of Larsen, WI, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by a dear friend: Frank Sandborn.
Friends may call Sunday from 1:00 to 3:30, when services will follow at 3:30 in the Marengo United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sue Antolik officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Marengo Cemetery. The DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home have been entrusted with his arrangements.
