Gerald E. Schenk, age 81, of Magnetic Springs and formerly of Marion, died Monday evening, March 30, 2015, at Heartland of Marysville following a struggle with his health during the month of March.
On August 4, 1933, Gerald was born in Columbus, Ohio, as a twin to the late Fred and Rilda (Kinkade) Schenk.
Shortly following graduating, Gerald enlisted to serve in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. For most of his time in the Army, he was stationed in Germany.
Upon his honorable discharge, Gerald returned home to marry Phyllis Ruhlen on December 18, 1955. They shared over 37 years together and lovingly raised five children. She preceded him in death on December 26, 1992.
Gerald worked for the Marion Correctional Institute as a corrections officer then for The Ohio Penal Industries as a floor Supervisor working his way up to shop Superintendant for over 23 years.
While at MCI, Gerald met Pamala S. Edge whom also worked for OPI from the ORW shop, whom he married on March 12, 1997. They have shared over 17 years together, and they have shared a love for animals…having many dogs and cats.
During his younger years, Gerald was an avid motorcycle rider, riding as often as he could until he was no longer able, due to his health. He also loved gardening, taking after his father by having a passion for growing and tending to roses.
With a love for sports, Gerald was always rooting on his beloved Cleveland Browns and Indians, and the Boston Celtics. He also loved watching girls softball, westerns, and the game show Jeopardy.
Gerald was a lifetime member of the Stephen J. Chaney VFW Post 7201 in Marion, he also was a member of the American Legion and Eagles in Marion, and the Moose both in Marion and Marysville.
Having a laid back personality, it took a lot to get Gerald excited, though he did have an ornery streak that would keep you on your toes.
He is survived by his wife, Pam Seeberg-Schenk of Magnetic Springs; five children: Debra (Rob) Titus of Green Camp, Steve Schenk of Marion, Kathy (John) Moore of Winder, Georgia, Donna (Rob) Moore of Bucyrus, and Patricia (Shane) Penix of Richwood; two step sons: Chester “C.B.” (Becky) Hinch of Plain City, and Timothy Hinch of Magnetic Springs; 11 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Christine Schenk of Nevada; and several nieces and nephews.
Including his first wife and parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his twin brother, Harold Schenk; and a half brother, Fred Schenk Jr.
Services honoring Gerald’s life will be observed privately by his family. At a later date, he will be buried in Grand Prairie Cemetery in Marion.
