John Clarence Westler, 78, of Marion

John Clarence Westler, age 78, of Marion passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at 9:17 AM in the Marion General Hospital.

He was born on August 7, 1936 in Frederickstown, Ohio to the late Darwin H. and Alberta E. (Reams) Westler.

John married the former Joyce E. Weyhmeller on November 15, 1959 in Bellville, Ohio and she survives.

He worked for many years at the Carter Lumber Co. and went on to work for over 20 years as a tool & die maker for Glenwood Range before his retirement.

John was an avid sports fan. He spent his childhood going to sprint car races with his dad. He eventually became a sprint car driver himself, driving for over 25 years. The races became a family event every weekend and many of his memories and friends were made during these years. After retiring as a driver, he became a sprint car owner and his son; Barney, was the driver. These years were some of the best years for the whole family.

John could be seen during all seasons at sporting events all over the state supporting his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. He was a huge supporter of Harding athletics, especially football.

John could give you detailed stories dating back to his childhood with such great detail. He had a precise memory that would awe you.

Surviving along with his wife; Joyce are a son; John “Barney” (Julie) Westler of Waldo, OH., three daughters; Janet Westler, Connie (Chuck) Baker, and Jackie Austin all of Marion, OH., a brother; Ed (Linda) Westler of Shelby, OH., a sister; Sue (Joe) Massoni of Wooster, OH., a step brother; Larry (Barb) Petee of Mansfield, OH., a step sister; Virginia Guenarri of Florida, eight grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by a sister; Pat Elliot.

Friends may call at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday at 1:00 PM with burial to follow in the Marion Cemetery.
