Valentine R. Vonderheide, 87, of Marion

Valentine R. VonderheideValentine R. Vonderheide, age 87, of Marion, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at his home.  The beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great grandfather was born April 28, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Val A. and Clara Vonderheide.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he proudly and honorably served his country.  Upon his discharge, he returned to Cincinnati, Ohio.  Within a very short time he met the love of his life Dolores Patrick.  They were married on February 28, 1948, and were blessed with 66 wonderful years together.  She preceded him in death on April 13, 2014.

Val’s career took them many places over the years throughout the US. and abroad, making many friends along the way.  He retired in 1993 as Vice President, Manufacturing Operations from Marion Power Shovel/Dresser Industries after 31 years of service.

After retirement, Val and Pat enjoyed traveling, spending time visiting children, grandchildren, family and friends and vacationing in the southeast.  He also enjoyed playing golf weekly with friends.

Val was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church; Marion Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, GYRO, and Marion County Club.  In recent years he enjoyed time spent volunteering for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Val made the best of every situation, always having a positive outlook and lived life to the fullest.  He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, bravery and compassion that will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.

Val was a loving husband, a wise and generous father and very special grandfather.  He will be dearly missed by his children, Valentine Patrick and wife Cindy, in Kansas, Ann Leslie and husband Barry Bates in Georgia and Richard Paul and wife Rita in Ohio.  He leaves behind six grandchildren, Jinger, Tiffany, Cynthia, Brian, Angelic and Bradley along with eight great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, brothers August and Robert and brother-in-law James and their families.

In addition to his wife and parents, one sister Clara A. Cruickshank preceded him in death.

His family will receive friends on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 5 to 7 PM at the Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Home, 347 West Center Street, Marion, Ohio.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church, 251 North Main Street on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 10 AM with Father Thomas Buffer presiding.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with full military honors provided by Marion County United Veterans Council.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, 342 North Main Street, Marion, Ohio 43302 or Marion General Hospice.  The Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Home, a division of Snyder Funeral Homes are handling the arrangements.  Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
