Changes announced to Marion County precincts and polling places

The Marion County Board of Elections has announced important changes for the voters of Marion County which will result in fewer precincts and the consolidation of polling locations.

John Meyer, Director of Marion County Board of Elections, said they are in the process of combining some of the smaller, adjacent precincts. The number of precincts is being reduced from 84 to 65.

“Before this precinct consolidation our county ranked 86th out of Ohio’s 88 counties in the lowest voter density per precinct,” said Meyer. “By making this change, we will still deliver the same high level of service the voters of our county, but we will be doing so in a more cost effective manner.”

“This precinct consolidation will be the only change to our precinct list for the foreseeable future,” said Meyer.

At the same time the board is consolidating precincts, they are performing the first round of polling place consolidations. Meyer said these consolidations are being done in order to better meet federal American’s with Disability Act (ADA) Compliance requirements and to reduce elections costs. The polling place consolidations will take place in several rounds over the next few elections cycles.

The voters of Marion County will still be able to vote early in the Board of Elections Office at 222 West Center Street in the Marion County Building. They have extended office hours which vary with each election cycle, but normally start four weeks before the election. Voters can also vote via mail using an absentee ballot.

Voters should contact the Board of Elections Office for early voting information. Voters can obtain an Absentee Ballot Request form by visiting their web site at www.marionelections.com/voting-absentee/.

Notification post cards for all voters whose precinct or polling place will change are being sent out in late July. Any voter with questions about the changes is urged to contact the Board Office for answers and assistance.

No action is needed by voters; after receiving the notification card they merely need to report to the new polling location for the November 3rd General Election if their polling place has changed.
