Marie Wilhelm, age 91 of Marion, Ohio died August 27, 2015 at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation – Community, Marion, Ohio. She was born in Jericho, Long Island, New York on July 16, 1924 to the late Konstanty and Sophia (Mulchinski) Szerbiak. On July 15, 1943, she married Herbert F. Wilhelm. He preceded her in death on December 10, 1996 after 53 years of marriage.
Marie worked in the Electronic Data Processing Dept. and also the Mail Dept. for Grumman Aircraft Engineering Company in Bethpage, Long Island. After her children were old enough she worked in clothing retail sales doing data entry and also as a sales person. After moving to Henderson, North Carolina when her husband retired, she worked as an Aid in a Head Start school program. After her husband’s death she moved to Marion to be close to family and despite her advanced age worked part time at MARCA Industries teaching crafts.
Marie loved music, especially jazz and classical and had many fond memories of dancing with her husband to the Big Bands in New York City. Marie sang at weddings and participated in a number of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. She was a long-time member of the Immaculate Conception Choir and Community Chorale in Hendersonville, North Carolina and also became a choir member at St. Mary Choir in Marion for a number of years. She liked to bake and cook and enjoyed sharing her creations with family, neighbors and friends. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, painting and playing cards.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, devoted husband Herbert, a daughter Carol, a brother, sister and niece. She is survived by: a sister, Elizabeth Dluzneski of Sarasota, Florida, two sons, David Wilhelm (Susan) of Marion, and Gary Wilhelm (Ina) of Riverside, Illinois. She also has five grandchildren Kenneth, Jennifer, Adam, Paul, and Stephen and one great grandson, Liam.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Gunder/Hall & Snyder Funeral Home, 347 West Center St., Marion from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM. A service will be held immediately following the visitation at 7:30 PM. Burial will take place next to her husband in Hendersonville, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marie’s honor to Ohio Health Hospice.
