Edward A. Mantey, 86, of Marion

Edward A. Mantey, age 86, of Marion, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Presidential Center of Marion.

Edward was born on April 26, 1929, in Sandusky, Ohio to the late Sylvester and Lucille (Smith) Mantey. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Sandusky, he served in the United States Air Force as a flight mechanic. Stationed at England’s RAF Bovingdon during the Korean War, Edward logged more than 5,000 hours working flights throughout Europe and northern Africa.

He married the love of his life, Carolyn (LaMarche) Mantey, on Jan. 22, 1955, who survives. They shared more than 60 years together, raising five children. A dairy farmer, Edward taught his children the value of hard work and the importance of faith.

Edward loved all his children and took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by this extended family, who will carry on his legacy: son Joe (Terri) Mantey of Marion and their children Jennifer (Dean) McMahan, and Jackie, Jacob (Brittany) and Joel (Chelsea) Mantey; son Timothy (Patricia) of Marion and their children Jill and Marc Mantey; son Lynn Mantey of Marysville, Ohio and his children Katelin (Rob) Ahern and Tom Mantey; daughter Mary (Jim) Longo of Marion and their children Jimmy, Sarah and Christie; and daughter Susan Mantey and her husband Doug Herlensky of Sunbury, and their daughter Grace Herlensky. His three great-grandchildren are Peyton and Morgan McMahan and Riley Mantey.

He also is survived by sister Margaret Young, Defuniak Springs, Fl., sister Enid “Rosie” Scheck, Sandusky, and sister-in-law Rosemary Mantey, Sandusky. In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by siblings James Mantey and Mary Lauber.

Edward met Carolyn through mutual friends at Put-in-Bay, Ohio, where they continue to have a summer residence. Ed treasured the friendships he made on the island, and always spoke fondly of driving his 1929 Model A Ford pickup in the Old Car parade every Sunday.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to his caregivers, therapists and medical staff at Presidential Center, Heartland Hospice and Marion General Hospital. The staff was very special to Edward, and he loved teasing “his girls.”
