Daniel Stephen Newmarker, 70, passed away suddenly at home on Friday, January 15, 2016. Dan was born on September 26, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio, and adopted by the late Leonard and Alice Newmarker.
After graduating from St. Mary’s in Columbus’ German Village in 1964, Dan attended Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. In the early 1970s, Dan became a middle-school teacher in Marion and got married. He had three sons—all raised in Marion.
Dan worked several jobs over his career, including managing pension funds for Nationwide Insurance and serving in customer relations for Verizon Communications. He retired in 2010.
Dan was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Mary Parish in Marion. Dan was also an old-school liberal Democrat who actively supported presidential candidates from George McGovern in 1972 to Bernie Sanders in 2016. He spent much of his free time with his many friends at the Knights of Columbus in Marion, where he’d served as Grand Knight. He was a beloved and caring father, always eager to help his sons succeed. He of course loved watching the Ohio State Buckeyes win!
Dan is survived by his three sons: Christopher (Kelly) of Minneapolis, Joseph of Marion, and Michael (Jirah) of Hampton, Virginia; and grandson Dylan (with another grandson on the way); as well as many longtime friends in Marion and Columbus.
His family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Friday, January 22nd, at the Gunder/Hall & Snyder Funeral Home, 347 W. Center St., Marion, where prayer services will be held at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 251 N. Main St., Marion. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Marion.
