Lola Mae (Murphy) Parker, age 85 of Marion, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Kindred Nursing Care in Marion due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. All of her children were at her side.
She was born on April 26, 1930 in Jamestown, NY to Esther Naomi (Olsen) and Lyle Dever Murphy. She was the 3rd oldest daughter in a family of 10 brothers and sisters. While a girl, her family moved to Marion County and she attended Waldo School. She was proud to have had training and work as a nurse’s aid, skills she again put into use in home health care after her retirement.
Despite her hard and humble childhood, she earned a successful career at General Telephone and Electronics (GTE). After 30 years, she retired as Department Administrator, overseeing the repair shop in the Leader Street building.
In 1948 she married Harry Madison Parker, who preceded her in death in 1989. Together they raise four children: Linda N. (Melvin) Crabtree, Mark Steven (Pamela) Parker, Gerald E. “Jerry” Parker and Brenda K. (Edward) Wygal all of Marion.
She and Harry enjoyed camping with the kids, dancing, traveling and treasure hunting. Most of all Lola was devoted to her family, always ready to help. She was thoughtful, smart, funny and known for always looking her best. Later in life she enjoyed a menagerie of dogs and cats.
Along with her parents and husband she is preceded in death by her brothers Richard and Sherwood Murphy; sisters: Alice Holdridge, Eulah (Bootsie) Collins, Beatrice Hinton, Cloney (Tiny) Reece and Elaine Bird.
