Dwight B. Bartow, age 90, of Marion, died peacefully at home in his sleep on Sunday evening, March 6, 2016.
On March 9, 1925, Dwight was born in Shawnee, Ohio, one of ten children of the late William and Florence (White) Bartow.
Leaving school early to join his fellow countrymen in the fight of World War II, Dwight served in the U.S. Navy aboard many battleships, though his main duty was operating their dock landing ships (lsd). He served in the North Pacific: the Philippines, Shanghai, China and the Marshall Islands; where he would shuttle troops and supplies between ships and shores.
Upon his honorable discharge, Dwight moved to Marion, Ohio, where he quickly met his wife to be, Louise Milliron. Soon thereafter they were married on September 6, 1947. They shared fifty one years of marriage together and lovingly raised one son, Stephen. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1999.
For the first twenty years plus of Dwight’s career, he worked as a barber at Oakland Heights and later at Babcock and Bartow. For the next twenty plus years, he was a car salesman at several different dealerships: Bennett Chevrolet, Danner Buick, McDaniel Automotive, and lastly Walston Motors until they moved to Bucyrus.
In the 1960’s, Dwight served as a hunting and fishing license agent for Marion County. He also was a member of the Meeker Sportsman Club, where he enjoyed trapshooting.
An avid golfer, Dwight was an excellent golfer who golfed every chance he had. His love for the game ran so deep that he would remember every shot by every golfer for the entire round, remembering even the club they used for the shot. He enjoyed playing at all the local courses, and especially enjoyed the “Old Men’s Club” at Kings Mill. Proudly, he golfed until he was 90 years old.
Dwight was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 7201 in Marion.
Over the years, one of Dwight and Louise’s favorite pastimes was spending the weekend at their trailer in Perry County to relax and catch up.
Being a barber and car salesman, most everyone knew Dwight. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and quick wit, and for his love for golf.
He will be missed by his son, Stephen (Sue) Bartow of Marion; one grandson, Stephen Bartow Jr.; two great-granddaughters: Megan Bosart and Allisha Shaw; one great-great-grandson, Jaden; two brothers: Pastor Donald (Mary) Bartow and Dale Bartow; a sister, Authorine MacEachran; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including his wife and parents, Dwight was preceded in death by a grandson, William Bartow; three brothers: Samuel, Chester and William Bartow; and three sisters: Helen Nance, Ina Mavin, and Rene Hook.
His family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will also be held there at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with his brother, Pastor Donald Bartow officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council in Grand Prairie Cemetery.
