Garnett L. Miller, age 81, of Marion, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016 at Heartland of Marion surrounded by her family. Garnett was born, one of seven children, in Johnson County Kentucky, June 21, 1934 to the late James and Gracie (Evans) Columbus. Garnett attended Salyersville High School in Salyersville, KY. In March of 1983, Garnett married Raymond E. Miller who preceded Garnett in death on July 27, 2014.
Garnett was a gracious and feisty woman who had a deep love for her family, which she prized more than anything. Her son was the apple of her eye. In younger years, Garnett and her son Phillip enjoyed watching The American Band Stand and listening to rock-n-roll. The louder the music, the faster she drove her car around town enjoying her favorite songs.
Cooking was a favorite of Garnett or “Gran” as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren and all of their neighborhood friends. She never read a recipe nor used a measuring spoon, but everything she made was down home good southern cooking. Her grandchildren meant the world to her and she instilled in them their hard work ethic and self-dignity.
Garnett loved animals especially dogs and her favorite one, “Little Bit.” She was an avid bingo and euchre player and could be found most days of the week socializing with her friends at Seton Square or watching her beloved Buckeyes. She especially enjoyed making food to share with others and enjoying “coffee time” with the ladies.
She was a woman who loved to dress up, put on makeup, do her nails, and have her hair done weekly at the salons, including Fiesta and Fantastique, and always raved about the wonderful hairdressers that kept her jet black hair looking beautiful.
Garnett was a wonderful homemaker, but also spent many years working outside the home as both a private home health nurse aide and at Americare Nursing Facility.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Phillip Ray (Sharon) Tackett of Delaware; step sons, Michael Ray Miller and Wendel Dale (Doris) Miller; step-daughters, Karen Sue Kromberg, Helen Ann Palacious, and Sandra Kay Chick; grandchildren, Tammi (Rob) Cowell of Marion, Terry Tackett of Marion, Tonya Boyd of Marion, and James (Sandy) Hoffman of Wallingford, CT; great-grandchildren, Ashlee Stover, Colten Cowell, Brayden Boyd, and Gavin Hoffman; along with numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Garnett was preceded in death by her first husband, Clay F. Tackett; son, Lewis Clay Tackett, siblings, Henry, Liz, Josie, Becky, Rosie, and Omi; granddaughter, Marina Tackett, and great-grandson, Preston Cowell.
Friends may call at Gunder/Hall & Snyder Funeral Home from 4 until a 6 PM funeral service Thursday, April 28, 2016 with Pastor Matt Hancock officiating. Memorial donations may be made in Garnett’s honor to Marion Area Humane Society.
