Patrick Lee Howell, age 52, died Sunday evening, September 18, 2011, at his residence following over a one year battle with cancer.
On March 20, 1959, Patrick was born in Ironton, Ohio, one of five children of Robert Howell of Ironton and the late Gearleen (Aldridge) Howell.
After his father found work at the Marion Power Shovel, they moved as a family to Marion in 1972, where Patrick graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1977.
Shortly following his graduation from high school, Patrick enlisted to join the U. S. Marine Corps. He was stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and served as a rifleman.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Marines, Patrick returned to his hometown of Marion where he found work at the Marion Power Shovel as a welder. He also continued welding at the Lima Tank Car, Union Tank and Power, and lastly Alloy Steel here in Marion.
For many years, Patrick served as a volunteer firefighter in Morral and was a member of the Army and Navy Club in Marion.
Having learned to love fishing from his father, Patrick managed to find a place to fish no matter the circumstances. He found fishing holes all throughout Marion County, and even fished in Lima, Springfield and Delaware to name a few. He also enjoyed hunting for deer every season.
Most important of all to Patrick were his two children, Rebecca and Darrick, who were “all Pat talked about.” He will forever be remembered for his kind and generous heart, his patriotism, and his family put it best when they simply said “I’m sure going to miss him.”
He will be dearly missed by his two beloved children: Rebecca and Darrick Howell, both of Marion; his father, Robert Howell of Ironton; two brothers and sisters: Bobby Howell of Daytona, Florida, Robin (Larry) Coykendall, Mike Howell, and Sue Moore, all three of Marion; and Uncle of Jesse (Andrea) Coykendall, Tatium Moore, Trey Moore and Tommy Howell.
The Howell family will greet friends from 4 – 6 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2011, at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services celebrating his life will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Celebrant Don Lockwood officiating. Military honors will then be performed by the Marion County United Veterans Council immediately following his services.
Rather than flowers, memorial contributions may be made his children and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.
The Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve Patrick’s family, and online condolences may be expressed to them by visiting www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
