Gerald W. “Jerry” Stringfellow, 70, of Marion

Gerald W. “Jerry” Stringfellow, age 70, of Marion, died peacefully on Sunday morning, October 16, 2011, at the Kingston Residence following an extended illness.

On June 27, 1941, Jerry was born in Orville, Ohio, the son of the late A. Doyle “String” and Marie (Tyrell) Stringfellow.

He graduated from Orville High School in the Class of 1959 as their salutatorian, and where his love for golfing began.

Following graduation from high school, Jerry attended the Ohio Northern University, where he earned his bachelors degree in pharmacy and was a member of the Kappa Psi pharmacist fraternity since 1961.

After earning his pharmacy degree, Jerry moved to Marion to become a pharmacist for Henry & Cooper’s pharmacy in 1964, where he had worked for over ten years.  Next, he worked at what would become CVS Pharmacy, on Delaware Ave., for over thirty years until he suffered from a stroke in August of 2002, which led to his retirement.

A man of faith, Jerry was an active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church for over twenty-five years.  He was also a devoted member of the Marion Noon Lion’s Club, where he had served as Past District Governor and had traveled to many state and national conventions on their behalf.

A lifelong avid golfer, Jerry had been a member of the Whetstone Golf Course for many years.  He was also fortunate enough to have been given lessons from Arnold Palmer, and played against Jack Nicklaus in college.

When Jerry wasn’t playing golf, he was either playing or following as many other sports as he could.  He was an avid Boston Celtic and Red Sox fan for as long as he could remember.  He held the city racquetball title in Marion for several years and enjoyed playing volleyball.  Also, later in life, he found he had a love for soccer and he enjoyed every moment of coaching his son, Jeremy’s soccer teams.  He had also been a season ticket holder for the Columbus Crew since their inception.

Putting the needs of others before his own, Jerry could have best been described as “a people pleaser”, as he always made sure everyone was happy.

Jerry will be dearly missed by his three children: Susan (Michael) Robertson of Pompano Beach, Florida, Karen Pennington of Bridgewater, Mass, and Jeremy (Kristin) Stringfellow of Upper Sandusky; four grandchildren: Alyssa and Kyle Robertson, Kaitlyn Pennington, and Oliver Wayne Stringfellow, and his step mother, Eulala “Lolly” Stringfellow of Orrville; and many dear friends.

The Stringfellow family will greet friends from 3 – 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, 249 E. Church St., Marion.  Services honoring his life will follow there at 5:00 p.m. with Rev. Daniel Kiger officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion Noon Lion’s Club, Epworth United Methodist Church, or the Kingston Residence, c/o Activity Fund, and they may be sent to the care of the funeral home.

The Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve Jerry’s family, and online condolences may be expressed to them by visiting www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
