Donald R. Schrote, age 83, of Marion, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Partners of Marion.
Donald was born in Richland Township on January 1, 1928 to Harvey Wesley and Lillian L. (Beckel) Schrote.
He was a graduate from Cardington High School in the class of 1946.
Donald proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army. Upon leaving the Army, he worked as a mechanic for the Marion Depot, Ft. Hayes and at the Newark Air force Base.
On November 9, 1952, Donald was united in marriage to Helen Yeager at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Richland Township and they have been blessed with 59 years together.
Donald’s family can be traced back as far as to make them one of Marion County’s first families. Donald and Helen spent a lot of time traveling all over, including a memorable trip to Alaska to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They would also travel around to watch the grandkids in their sporting events. Along with traveling, gardening was also a favorite past time along with cheering on the Cincinnati Reds and The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Donald was an active member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was also a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waldo, where he served faithfully as a church Trustee.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife Helen Schrote of Marion; his children: David L. Schrote of Marion, Dr. Mark R. (Laura) Schrote of Elliott City, Maryland and Thomas (Nina) Schrote of Williamston, Michigan; grandchildren: Justin, Kaitlin, Haleigh, Jacqueline, Jacob and Julieanne; and several nieces and nephews.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents Harvey W. and Lillian L. Schrote and a brother Gerald (Mae Eileen) Schrote.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center St., Marion from 4PM to 7PM; Funeral services will be held Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 135 W. Main St., Waldo at 10:30AM with Pastor Sarah Schaf officiating. Burial will follow in Waldo Cemetery.
