To help boost the numbers of breastfeeding women, the Marion Public Health’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program is offering a free Breastfeeding Basics Class and Breastfeeding Support Group for WIC and non-WIC participants alike. The goal of these programs is to help breastfeeding Mothers successfully achieve their breastfeeding goals and dispel myths.
Marion Public Health says that because for much of the last century poor advice was given about breastfeeding, women were discouraged from doing it. During that time breastfeeding became an unusual choice in this country.
However, in recent decades with all the new technology and research, society is realizing the importance of human milk for human babies and Moms are encouraged to breastfeed. Although several myths still exist, more and more Mothers are breastfeeding each year.
The Breastfeeding Basics Class is held the 1st Tuesday of each month at 2:00 pm at the WIC office located at 217 W. Center Street. The Breastfeeding Support Groups meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Southland Mall and the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 2:00pm at the WIC office.
To register for either program or for more information please call the WIC office at (740) 383-5533, ext. 329 to speak with Krystal. Walk-ins will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
