Nancy Lee (Walton-Douthett) Wright, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, peacefully passed away in her sleep after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer on March 8, 2012.
She is survived by her husband, Charlie; four children, Valerie Goodrich of Marion, Phil (Jill) Wright of Denver, Colorado, Carrie (Jeff) Guyton of Delaware, Ohio, and Heather (Randy) Holt of Marion; ten grandchildren: Somer, Cabe, Kelsey, Nick, Karah, Courtney, Max, Sam, Lauren and Luke; two great-grandchildren: Carter and Hudsen; and her dog, Brutus Buckeye.
Nancy, the daughter of Novella and Philip Walton, was born July 2, 1931, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her family made Marion their home in 1947, where she had lived ever since. She married her high-school sweetheart, Charlie Wright, in 1951.
Nancy graduated from Harding High School in 1949 and enrolled in the Lima Memorial School of Nursing and graduated in 1952. She worked in several nursing positions before she worked as a school nurse for Marion City Schools for 33 years, retiring in 1998. Her job was as much an avocation as a vocation. She took her role to heart, nurturing and caring for hundreds of children during her tenure.
Throughout her life, Nancy made tremendous contributions to the Marion community, serving as officer and director of numerous civic boards, including Marion General Hospital, the Junior Service Guild (past president and stage manager for the Follies for 20 years), Children’s Services (past president), the Marion Dental Society, 648 Mental Health/ADAMH Board and the Palace Theatre Board. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood Chapter DT. Her dedication to the community was honored in 2000, when she was named Marion Citizen of the Year.
Nancy’s greatest love, however, was her family. Nothing brought her greater pleasure than being surrounded by loved ones, whether it was a family cookout, an outing, or just relaxing at home. She gave of herself tirelessly to raising her family, being a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother.
Nancy lived a long, gratifying and productive life, and she serves as a shining example of one who was dedicated to her family, friends and the community.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 12, 2012 at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 East Center Street between the hours of 4PM and 7PM. A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be held on Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 143 South Prospect Street in Marion at11AM, friends may gather at the church at 10:30. Rev. Rob Howard and Rev. Dan Kiger will be officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery.
If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family. A memorial fund will be established in Nancy’s name to support her favorite local charities.
