John W. Postell, age 59, of Marion, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2012, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born March 5, 1953 in Marion, to Robert and Betty Postell, the youngest of three children.
He was a gifted athlete at Harding High School, where he was an especially successful pitcher. He went on to play semi-professional baseball and earned tryouts for the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds.
On June 2, 1972, he married the former Laura Cochran at Fair Park Baptist Church, with Rev. Richard Thomas as celebrant.
John proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army National Guard. He completed a bachelor’s degree in business at Ashland University and worked for many years at Eaton Corp., Dana Corp., and Sypris Technologies and was most recently employed as Sales Manager at Spencer Forge and Manufacturing.
John was an avid baseball fan, devoted father and husband, and generous friend. He loved music and was a talented guitar player, and treated his children to impromptu concerts from time to time. In the summer months you could find John enjoying golf with his closest friends.
In addition to his loving wife of 39 years, John is survived by his parents Robert and Betty Postell, Marion; daughter Sally Deem, son-in-law Charles Deem, and grandson Andrew Deem, Marion; son Joe Postell and daughter-in-law Allison Postell, Colorado Springs; and son Samuel, enrolled at Ashland University. He is further survived by brother Robert Postell and sister-in-law Tada Postell, Marion; sister Rebecca Patrick, Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was especially close to niece Steffany Massie, sister-in-law Linda Massie, and the Keller, Ferrell, and Elliott families, who remained by his side throughout his illness.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 16, at 11:30 a.m. at Fair Park Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Durtsche officiating. A private burial service will be held. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 15 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Boyd-Born Funeral Home, 122 W. Columbia St.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fair Park Baptist Church or a college scholarship fund established at Chase Bank for John’s son Sam.
John’s love and generosity will be missed by many. He will be remembered always, and forever loved by family and friends.
