The Marion Police Department arrested a man with a sawed-off shotgun at a downtown bar after the man allegedly robbed a person just one block away.
On Sunday, June 10, at 12:31am, officers responded to the 140 block of South Main Street to investigate a report of a man being robbed at gunpoint by a subject brandishing a sawed-off shotgun. The suspect fled southbound from the area after getting a small amount of cash from the victim.
Approximatly 15 minutes later, Ptl. McCullough said he located Jon Cocherl, 49, of Marion, inside Someplace Else Bar, 176 South Main Street, with a sawed-off shotgun protruding from the waistband of his pants.
The ensuing investigation led to the arrest of Cocherl and pending charges of aggravated robbery, carrying a concealed weapon, weapons under disability, carrying a weapon into a liquor permit establishment, weapons while intoxicated, and unlawful possession of a dangerous ordinance.
“It is absolutely amazing that he (Cocherl) could claim the he was unaware that carrying a sawed-off shotgun into a bar is against the law,” stated Lt. Mike Shade in a media release. “But then again, we are talking about someone who appears to have had a sole motive of obtaining some drinking money in committing aggravated robbery.”
