The Bucyrus Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a car versus train crash that occurred on Tuesday, July 24 at approximately 2:14 pm. The driver of the car was killed in the crash.
The crash occurred on State Route 67 inside the Village of Sycamore just north of State Route 103 in Wyandot County.
The Patrol says Shelly A. Cleveland, 41, 6185 East State Route 18, Republic, Ohio, was operating a 1994 Ford Tempo. Cleveland was northbound on State Route 67 and failed to yield to the railroad crossing lights and was struck by a Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway train traveling westbound on the Carey Sub-Division Railway. The vehicle came to rest beside the tracks just west of the crossing.
The railroad crossing at State Route 67 was equipped with mechanical flashing red lights and was found to be working at the time of the crash. There were no crossing gates.
Cleveland was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wyandot County Corner and was transported from the scene by Sycamore Fire/EMS to the Walton Funeral Home in Sycamore.
The Patrol says Cleveland was not wearing her safety belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the crash.
Sycamore Police, Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office and Sycamore Fire/EMS all assisted at the scene of the crash.
The crash is still under investigation.
