Edna L. (Schweinfurth) Patch, formerly of Washington, D.C. died Saturday evening, August 18, 2012, at the Marion Manor Care Facility just two days shy of her 92nd birthday.
On August 20, 1920, Edna was born in Waldo, Ohio, the third of four children of the late Samuel W. and Florence E. (Smith) Schweinfurth. She graduated from Waldo High School in the Class of 1938.
Shortly after graduating high school, Edna enrolled at the Ohio State University in Columbus, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education. After teaching for a year, she was attracted by a more glamorous and exciting job in the air. In 1943 she became a stewardess with American Airlines. After receiving training in New York City she served for 17 years, living in numerous places along the way, such as California, Texas, and Arizona. She cherished getting the opportunity to travel the world, many friendships made and live the glamorous lifestyle of a stewardess in those time.
Wanting to settle down and start a new career, Edna enrolled in the Catholic University in Washington D.C., where she earned her Master’s degree in Library Science in 1960. She then worked as a librarian until retiring in 1986 from the Prince George County Library near Washington D.C. She had been an avid reader her entire life, particularly enjoying non-fiction books.
On February 19, 1977, Edna married George Nicholas “Nick” Patch who had to be quite persistent to get that first date. They enjoyed traveling during their 30 years together. He preceded her in death on February 23, 2007.
Very knowledgeable in many subjects, Edna was not afraid to share her opinion with you, especially when it involved politics. She had a feisty spirit and enjoyed her independent lifestyle.
She will be missed by her sister, Mary Grimes of Allen Park, Michigan; and by seven nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Edna was preceded in death by two siblings: Alice Marie Harris and Roy H. Schweinfurth.
Her family will hold a memorial services in the Marion Cemetery at a later date.
