Proposal to Increase County Sales Tax to Appear on November Ballot
The Marion County Commissioners Tuesday morning voted 2-1 to place a 0.25 percent sales tax increase proposal on the November ballot for voters to decide. During more than an hour of discussion, there were voices for and against the increase, of which the lion’s share would go to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Multi-County Correctional Center.
Summer Program Provides Youth with Valuable Work Experience
Marion County Job and Family Services, in partnership with Marion Goodwill Industries Inc., has once again provided summer employment opportunities to approximately 70 youth. The goal of the program, funded by Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds, is to provide Marion County youth, ages 16-24, valuable work experience while earning a paycheck to help meet basic needs.

Danielle Davis captured the title of Miss Marion Popcorn Festival 2012 Saturday evening, August 4, during competition at Grant Middle School.
By winning the Miss Marion Popcorn Festival title, Davis earned a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by Jason and Shanna Sharp in memory of Steve Rhoades who sponsored this scholarship for many years.. She also received the Festival crown, a crown necklace, and banner.

Mandi Brumfield was named Ms. Marion Popcorn Festival 2012during the popcorn royalty festivities Saturday evening, August 4, at Grant Middle School. She won a $100 cash award, and a necklace and crown sponsored by Goldrush.
Smith and Thompson Crowned Miss and Mr. Wee Pop
Paytn Smith and Alexander Thompson were named Miss and Mr. Wee Pop 2012 during competition held Saturday morning at Grant Middle School. Smith is the 2-year old daughter of Tiffany Smith and Jonathan Lechleitner. She also took Overall Costume with a Popcorn Theme and Overall Photogenic. Thompson is 5-years-old and is the son of Bryan and Ashley Thompson. He won Overall Swimwear as well as his age division in both formalwear and photogenic.
