The annual Marion Popcorn Festival Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, August 12, at 8:00 a.m. at King’s Mill Golf Course. The cost of $50.00 per person or $200.00 per foursome will include golf, cart and dinner. A cash bar will be available. Proximity prizes and low scores will be awarded. The senior category will be considered those 62 years of age and older.
Car Struck by Train in Wyandot County, One Killed
The Bucyrus Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a car versus train crash that occurred on Tuesday, July 24 at approximately 2:14 pm. The driver of the car was killed in the crash.
The crash occurred on State Route 67 inside the Village of Sycamore just north of State Route 103 in Wyandot County.
Ohio Wildlife Council Approves Migratory Bird Season Dates
The Ohio Wildlife Council has approved the state's early migratory game bird hunting seasons for this fall, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. September 1 kicks off the state's hunting season with the opening of dove, Canada goose, teal, rail, moorhen and snipe.
City Council Approves Two Tax Issues
Marion City Council approved two tax issues at their meeting on Monday, June 23. The first issue will require income tax to be paid on winnings from casinos, lottery, bingo, and other games of chance. The second issue is a proposal to raise the City of Marion income tax by 0.25 percent. That increase request will now appear on the November ballot for voters to approve or deny.
Marion County Unemployment Jumps
The unemployment rate for Marion County jumped to 8.1 percent in June 2012, up from 7.4 percent in May 2012. This comes in the same month that saw the statewide rate go down just slightly. The reason, according to officials, is that the statewide rate is adjusted for seasonal changes and the local rate is not.
Red Cross Issues Emergency Call for Blood Donors
The American Red Cross says national blood supplies have reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected over the last month across the country. This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year.
City Aquatic Center Opening Early for Adults Only
The City of Marion’s Lincoln Park Aquatic Center has started opening early to give adults a change to swim without the kids. They are now open from 7:30 am to 11:00 am Monday through Friday for any adult that would like to come in and walk the Lazy River or swim laps.
