Warning About Federal Grant Scams

Federal grant scams are sweeping through Ohio, Attorney General Richard Cordray warned.

"Since early June, my office has received more than a dozen reports of Ohioans who were targeted by scammers posing as grant officers," Cordray said. "Many of the calls appear to originate in the 202 area code. This creates an illusion of legitimacy because 202 is a Washington D.C. area code."

Ohio Named Finalist to Receive Federal Education Funds

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia were named finalists Tuesday in the second round of the federal "Race to the Top" school reform grant competition, giving them a chance to receive a share of $3.4 billion.

The states are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.

Bucyrus Man Killed in Marion County Crash

Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Monday at 5:46 p.m. The crash, on State Route 98 south of Patten Pike, in Marion County, killed a Bucyrus man.

Sheriff’s Office Discovers Stolen Vehicles, Guns, and Drugs

Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff's Office had a busy Monday after they discovered stolen vehicles and a shotgun while training in a quarry. In addition, aerial surveillance led to the discovery of marijuana plants in a corn field.

Police Locate, Arrest Missing Teen

A missing teen and a New Jersey man were located and arrested Monday after they disappeared together early Sunday morning. 13-year-old Dawn Gattshall of West Fairground Street in Marion was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center on an unruly juvenile charge. 19-year-old Buddy Bojacuick of Vineland, New Jersey, was arrested for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and interference with custody.

State Ending HIV Assistance for More Patients

The state plans to drop another 500 Ohioans from a program that pays for their HIV medications, in order to save Ohio nearly $3 million per year.

Officials are working on a plan to help only the sickest Ohioans with HIV pay for their medicine, said Jay Carey, a management analyst for the HIV drug program.

Study Shows Flaws in Ohio Prison, Probation System

Ohio's probation system is too fragmented and the state cycles too many low-risk offenders serving short sentences through the prison system, a report to be released Monday finds.

The study also says offenders who commit minor drug and property crimes are often supervised for years, while inmates who pose a high risk to public safety are released from prison without supervision.

Morral Mayor, Former Dog Warden Killed in Crash – Updated

Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Sunday at 9:13 pm. The crash, on State Route 231 at Baer Road in Grand Prairie Township, killed the Mayor of Morral.
