I watched a “conversation” between Trevor Noah (Daily Show) and Tomi Lauren today. What I saw were two intelligent, informed individuals who had no interest in hearing one another. They only had an interest in hearing a couple words from the other that they could twist to win a point for their side. All while being cheered on by an audience who couldn’t get enough.
This is not uncommon in our society today. Many do not converse to learn, be challenged, and to grow. We look for things around us to tell us we are right and the other side is wrong. This only leads to division and not unity.
The other common problem in conversation today is a lack of them. When we only want others to agree with us, many simply will deny conversations from happening that might challenge them or make them think outside what they are comfortable with. Often times, they chose to have side conversations with others to drum up support and understanding while not talking to other side that can bring healing or conclusion. This only leads to division and not unity.
Maturity and community leads to people who are willing to converse and listen.
